Chris Columbus had storyboarded a few scenes in which Kevin would have dreams where the house comes to life. One included the evil furnace in the basement, which would come to life and chase him to the stairs on all fours, and another where several toy nutcrackers would come to life, along with the house. Marv is probably Jewish, considering the fact he said "Happy Hanukkah Marv!" to himself while robbing the toy store in Home Alone 2, Daniel Stern is also Jewish in real life, hence his character having the same religion. Macaulay Culkin was only allowed to work on-set five hours a day because of child labor laws. The crew planned out the scenes around his schedule, putting him on camera alone a lot. The title was knocked up during filming in homage to Chicago - Engel mit schmutzigen Gesichtern when they realized they needed a title for the label of the video cassette Kevin puts in the VCR. John Candy's role as a polka musician is a reference to a skit he did for Second City TV called The Shmenge Brothers, featuring him and Eugene Levy as polka-playing brothers Yosh and Stan Shmenge. In a few scenes before, when Kevin discovers he's home alone, he runs outside and finds the cars, with the garage doors indeed open. Buzz was voted the second-greatest movie bully of all time by Entertaintment Weekly. During the dinner scene when Kevin's dad knocks the soda over, he accidentally throws Kevin's plane ticket into the trash.
